SXSW 2010 >>> 01. And we're back!

One year gone and we are back! It has been some months this Chronicles have been laying down, but they were not forgotten in any way. This year I will not cross the Atlantic to be in Austin - Texas, to participate in the incredible South by Southwest 2010 Festival, but I will be looking at everything I can, from the distance of a computer screen, and I will be sharing a little bit of what goes on with the portuguese musicians, to anyone who comes here.

In 2010 the Portuguese menu is the smallest of the last 5 ou 6 years, and far from what you could see last year, with Clã, David Fonseca, The Legendary Tigerman, Rita Redshoes and Nicole Eitner, but in anyway deserves less attention.

By the 4th time in a row, David Fonseca is a part of the Festival, and this year he will have first-timers Papercutz, along him.

Those who don't know them, click on the pictures below and listen to their music at their respective MySpace pages. I'll be right back!

41. Nicole Eitner and the SXSW'09 (part 1)

On April 10th we were with Nicole Eitner in Cascais. She told us about her trip to Texas and how the SXSW’09 was higher than her expectations, about her concert at St David’s Church, the concerts she saw and the inspiration and wish to participate on the SXSW;2010, preferably with a lot of Portuguese bands as company. Here’s the first part of the video.

40. David Fonseca nad the SXSW'09

Of the Portuguese musicians that had the opportunity to step on the South by Southwest stages, David Fonseca is the one which did it more often in the last few years with three consecutive presences. We wanted to know his opinion and David sent us some comments which enable us to understand the way he perceived this visit to Austin and how was the 2009 festival edition.

This year showcase occurred at the Stephen F’s Hotel bar and in a generic way it “went very well and was fun. Playing on a reduced format is always a great challenge and artistically it was very positive”, he commented on his show, which had the participation of Rita Redshoes on some of the songs that he presented.

The contact with the music industry and with all the foreign media is another positive catch of SXSW. “We’re able to establish several contacts with the industry and everyday of the festival were valuable on advertising this project”.

For someone which returns to such an event with particular characteristics, one of the obvious questions encompass a comparison with the other editions in which he participated, being that “it’s the 3rd time that I participate on this festival and everything seemed within its usual…a big rock festival, an incredible place to get to know people and new music and establish contacts with the other industries”. So as to arise curiosity of those which followed the SXSW by distance he ends by saying that “ the festival spirit was very much alive and it is difficult to explain it to those who weren’t there…”.

Amongst the thousands of shows happening between the 18th and 22nd March and of the concerts he went, some stood out. “I watched some bands that I really liked… Richard Swift was one of the shows that I enjoyed the most, he’s one of the musicians that I most admire on live performances and I hope he comes to Portugal very soon! I also liked to watch Laura Marling (one of the records I listen to the most last year), Fanfarlo, St. Vinvet andPJ Harvey…”, the mention of the concert at Stubbs where John Parish accompanied PJ Harvey became a key reference to those that had the opportunity to watch it.

The influence that the different musicians that he watched may have over the music he does possibly will not overlap to the impact that the 6th Street environment has on the people that were there. “ It is likely that they may influence me musically (the concerts I watched), although the influences don’t work as straightforward. I think that it is easier to be influenced by the festival spirit and by the systematic party of those 4 crazy days”, are the words which reinforce what he had mentioned before.

Because participating in the SXSW requires a considerable investment, forcing many musicians to not bring all the desirable means or band elements, it would make sense for a group of artists to face their participation on a coordinated way so to gather more attention, better means and even some financial support? “That would be logical although most of the bands of other countries do it with the governmental or private support. Maybe it’s time for the Portuguese government cooperate on a initiative that has taken the Portuguese music to other public and industries, who knows if next year that is a reality and we have a Portuguese day at SXSW?“.

As for repeating SXSW participation, after 3 consecutive years of travelling to Texas, the desire still holds, independently of focusing on other events. “ I think that it is always a valuable experience to participate on events such as this, I’ll see how next year agenda looks like. And there are many other wordy festivals on which is its worthwhile to bet on.”

Thanks David.

39.Chatting with Manuela Azevedo (part 2 of 2)

On the second part of our chat with Manuela Azevedo we can listen to her talking about the relevance of having a Portuguese presence at a festival like the South by Southwest (SXSW'09) and about some of the countries also represented there this year. Also discussed by her are the North-American press interest which was present on the second Clã’s concert and other contact made there, as well as the environment that one can experience on E 6th Street and the will to return to Austin already on next year.

38. Chatting with Manuela Azevedo (part 1 of 2)

A few days ago I went with Rui Baptista to meet with the Clã in São João da Madeira, and we were chatting with Manuela Azevedo about the Clã’s South by Southwest participation (SXSW’09).

Here is the first part of the conversation video, where we can listen to Manuela talking about the “São João do Rock”, the city and people of Austin, the Clã’s concerts at South by southwest and the receptivity of the Portuguese language by the people present at the festival, or about the very positive impression that the P.J. Harvey concert with Josh Parish gave.

37. Austin by night video

After the video which showed some of what the SXSW’09 and Austin are like duing the day, here is the nocturnal version. All the comments that I made yesterday about the sound and image are still applicable to this post…If you’re good with music you may be able to recognize right on the start “Paris is burning” by Ladyhawke!

36. Austin by day video

Throughout my days in Austin I recorded some video clips with my camera which I now edited into two short films... if they can be called that. I call your attention from the start to the fact that the total 15 minutes of film aren’t always of the best quality either in sound or image, but they show a little of the spirit and music that one experiences in Austin during the SXSW’09.

A little break...

We are entering the final moments of Chronicals from Austin.Of course we are very keen in returning to Austin and tell you what is like for a few Portuguese bands to go to that big event called South by Southwest Festival. We felt the need to do a litte break. Unfortunately time is not enough for all we want to do. During the next few days we will publish some pictures of Austin as well as some videos that were done there, which I haven't had the chance to put toghether. After that we will officialy close this year activities for this blog.

I hadn't mentioned this before but last week me and Rui B. have gone to S.J.Madeira to visit the Clã. We had to oportunity of chatting with Manuela Azevedo and listen to her telling us how were the adventures of her band at the Uncle Sam's country... In a few days you will have the opportunity to hear what Manuela told us, as well as hear some more opinions of others that were at Austin.

Other business that is stealing some sometime to the authors of this newspaper is the fact that some surprises are on their way, hopefully for the enternainement and joy of the people who want to know about the activities of the musicians that work in our country... but, I can only provide some details within a few weeks.

Stay tunned!
